REVENUE OF RAILWAYS
INCREASE IN THE MONTH EFFECT OF WAGES ADVANCE. FIGURES FOR THE TEN MONTHS. DECREASE IN THE NETT RETURN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 30. The financial results of the railway working up to November 10 were announced to-day by the chairman of the Railways Board (Mr. H. H. Sterling) for the four-weekly period which ended on that date. The expenditure increased by £19,059 and the revenue by £20,145, resulting in an increase in the nett revenue for a period of £lOB6. For the portion of the financial year from April 1 to November 10 the expenditure increased by £231,315 and the revenue by £222,379, resulting in a decrease in the nett revenue of £8936. A 5 per cent, increase in salaries and wages was responsible for an increase in the expenditure of £11,306 for the four weeks ended November 10 as compared with expenditure for the corresponding four weeks for the previous financial year, and the 5 per cent, increase in salaries and wages from April 1 to November 10, 1934, resulted in an increase in expenditure of £88,819 as compared with an expenditure for the same period of last year. In making a comparison of the nett revenue, the position of the department, the increased expenditure on salaries and wages resulting from the 5 per cent, increase during the current year requires to be taken into consideration'in assessing the relative results achieved during the periods referred to.
