DOMINION VISITORS

THIS MONTH’S ARRIVALS. POLITICIANS FROM OVERSEAS. Distinguished visitors due to arrive in New Zealand during December include the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, and his sister, Miss Sheila MacDonald; Senator the Rt. Hon. F. S. Malan, of South Africa; and Mr. Morris Alexander, KG., M.P;, also of South Africa. They are at present in Australia, having gone there to attend the Melbourne centenary celebrations. Another prominent visitor will be Mr. W. J. (McKell, M.L.A., of Sydney. Mr. MacDonald is a son of the British Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Ramsay MacDonald. He is the National Labour representative of the Bassetlaw Division of Notts in the House of Commons, which he entered in 19?0 after two unsuccessful attempts in 1923 and 1924. Mr. MacDonald, who has been Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Dominions Office since 1931, is chairman of the Empire Settlement Committee. Mr. Malan has been a member of the Union of South Africa Senate since 1927. Prior to that he served terms as Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Education and Minister of Mines and Industries. For a period in 1918 and 1919 he was acting-Prime Minister. Mr. Malan, who will be accompanied by Mrs. Malan on his visit to New Zealand, has several publications to his credit. From 1895 to 1908 he was the editor of “Ons Land,” a leading South African journal. Mr. Alexander is a representative of one of the Cape constituencies in the South African Parliament, which he first entered in 1908. Mr. McKell, who will be accompanied by Mrs. McKell, is a prominent member of the Labour Party. He has occupied various Ministerial posts when State Labour Governments have been in office in New South Wales. He was Minister of Justice from 1920 to 1922, Minister of Justice and Assistant Treasurer from 1925 to 1927, Minister of Local Government from 1930 to 1931, and again Minister of Justice from 1931 to 1932.
