PRACTICAL TEACHING

SCHOOL AGRICULTURAL CLASS.

TUITION IN JUDGING LAMBS.

By arrangement with the supervisor of the farm classes at New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Mr. W. B. Grant, 10 of the boys taking the agricultural course were given yesterday a lesson in judging lambs for export. The lambs were selected by Messrs. Hogg and Symon, buyers for Messrs. Borthwick Ltd., Waitara, and when yarded were judged by the boys after the buyers had given a demonstration of what constituted a well finished fat lamb suitable for export. The boys were divided into groups and their judging was considered good, one group including only one lamb not up to the standard required. The reasons for its rejection and the points to be looked for in lambs for export were explained by the experts, who were thanked by J Phillips, on behalf of the class, for the demonstration.

Subsequently the class, accompanied by Messrs. Grant, Rowson and McKeon of the High School teaching staff, proceeded to the freezing works at Waitara. The boys saw the lambs they had judged after slaughter and Messrs. Hogg and Symon explained further the qualities required for a first-grade lamb carcase. The visitors were then s!*nvn through the works by the manager, Mr. P. J. Allen, each process being explained by the officer in charge. W. Birchell thanked Mr. Allen and'the departmental managers for the trouble taken on behalf of the class, which had experienced an interesting and instructive afternoon.
