UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
PAYMENTS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. LAST MINUTE RUSH EXPECTED. Despite the fact that registered unemployed are taking full advantage of the concessions made in connection with the payment of the quarterly unemployment levy, the payments made at th© New Plymouth post office up till 4 p.m. yesterday were 210 fewer than was the case at the same period of last year. With but two days to go there ar© still 1500 payments to be made. In November, 1933, 4040 levies were paid, while at closing time yesterday 2564 payments had been made. The number of payments each day has increased steadily each day, and yesterday was particularly strenuous for the staff. With 1500 payments still to be made, a lastminute rush is fully expected. On the last two days of the same period of last year the payments were 640 and 650. The reduction of the levy from 5s to Is for registered unemployed was a considerable concession, and in the main was being fully availed of, said an official yesterday. The reduction of the charge under the Relief Emergency Act from Is to 10d has made more work for the receiving tellers, as appropriate reductions had to be calculated in every case.
