MINOR PROSECUTION CASES.
JUDGMENT ON CIVIL CLAIMS.
Convictions were entered on minor charges by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., at the Waitara Court yesterday. Judgment was also given for plaintiffs in the following undefended civil cases:— A. Rawles v. W. Shelford £3 4s (£1 15s 6d); S. McAfie v. J. Cowper, £lO 18s 6d (£2 17s); Beckbessingers Ltd. v. R. Carey, £2 9s (£1 7s 6d); S. H. Rogers and Sons v Wi Karipi junr., £2 5s 5d (£1 19s); A*. J. Kibby v. K. Ropiha, 18s (16s); H. Wells and Co. v. T. Tahi, £2 (£1 8s 6d); C. T. Hall and C. Wharton, £ll Ils (£2 14s). under a judgment summons W. H. Lobb was ordered to pay Dr. G. P. Adamson £lB 16s 6d (costs £1 Is) at the rate of 10s a month, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Oki Taylor wa? ordered to pay H. Wells and Co. Ltd. £2 Is 6d by December 28, in default 3 days’ imprisonment. Hugh Burnard, who was caught on hotel premises after hours by Constable J. Tocher on November 3 and November 10 was convicted and discharged for the first offence and fined 40s (costs 12s) for the second. Constable Tocher said Burnard was a decent hard-working man. On the second occasion he seemed under the impression he could collect after hours beer ordered before 6 o’clock. John William Watt, who was observed riding an unregistered motor-cycle on Augwrt 30, was fined 20s, with 10s costs. Constable Tocher said he had stopped ths machine, which was bearing a dealers’ number-plate. Watt said he was trying it out but he had used the cycle in the subsequent three weeks to ride to and from New Plymouth. J. G. Brown, Mt. Messenger, who wrote pleading guilty, was fined 20s (costs 12s) for operating an unlicensed radio set. Brown had notified the postmaster, said Constable Tocher, that the set would not work and was being dismantled. Later an inspector paid a visit and found it in use. After that occasion the set had operated only two or three hours and then had not worked any more. T. C. Clissold, Main Highways Board inspector, proceeded against Messrs. Warren and Treweek for operating a motor truck on the Auckland- Wellington road near Uruti on October 4 with a greater load than that allowed by the road classification and a greater load than the license permitted. Defendants were fined 30s and costs 10s on the first charge, being convicted and discharged on the second. Clissold said the firm had a previous conviction at Te Kuiti for similar offences, but had since mended its ways. He had weighed the firm’s truck on occasions since and had found the load satisfactory.
