MAORI ANGLICANS
TROUBLE OVER BISHOPRIC.
CONFERENCE HELD AT PETONE.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.
Questions in connection with the bishopric of Aotearoa Were the subject of an important meeting at ,Petone today. Representatives of the Anglican section df the Maori race wore present from the southern end of the North Island.
Mr. H. D. Bennett said in an interview that he had attended the meeting and had supplied it with information regarding recent developments, the effect' of which caused dismay. After reviewing the establishment of the bishopric for the Maoris Mr. Bennett said bishops had been appointed only e§ suffragen without a diocese, and with only permissive powers. The general synod early this year had enacted two special statutes providing for -the establishment of a control board to assist the Maori bishop. This proved acceptable to the Maoris, but the Waikato and Waiapu dioceses had dissented, - threatening tile whole scheme. ■: -
He understood the Wellington diocese had shelved the scheme, and he feared it Was likely the statutes would become inoperative. There seemed to be no end of difficulties, and there was an impasse. The question will be the subject of Maori meetings in various parts of New Zealand.
