DOMINION BUTTER

CONDITION ON ENGLISH MARKET*

Danish Better But Dearer.

The condition and advertisement of - New Zealand butter oh the English market Was commented upon yesterday By Mr. C. Ci Ward, who returned this Weelt from a visit to Britain and America. “In the Midlands,’’ he said, “New Zealand buttef is Well advertised, several boxes Often being prominently displayed in shops. The windows were well dresshd and skilfully arranged, the words ‘New Zealand butter’ printed In large letters with a ticket showing the price per pound. New Zealand cheese Was often displayed aS well.” * For the purpose of comparing New Zealand buttei 1 and dther brands Mr. Ward When at Wolverhampton purchased a pound of New Zealand produce ht Sid, one df Danish at Is aiid one of British at Is. When he tested the three samples he had to admit that Danish Was the best. It tasted freshet, as waS only to be expected since it was probably but a week old. Though it had a slightly stale flavour, the New Zealand Butter Was Very satisfactory, leaving little fodni for cdmplaiht. The British farmers’ butter was Very greasy, too moist and oversalted. Though fresh, it could not compare with the Danish article as a selling proposition T at the same price, and when Mr. Ward tasted it two days later it was. distinctly tainted. Evidently it did not keep well. “I consider people in England have a Very satisfactory butter ift the New Zealand article,” said Mr. Ward, “especially when the difference in price is regarded.”
