FLIERS’ INTENTIONS
CERTIFICATE FOR MACHINE ISSUE EXPECTED SHORTLY. The future plans of the two young airmen, Mr. R. G. Whitehead, Wellington, and Mr. E. R. Nicholl, Sydney, who flew the Tasman Sea on Thursday last, are as yet indefinite, but it is expected they will remain about six months in the Dominion before returning by steamer to Australia. A New Zealand certificate of airworthiness has not yet been granted for their Puss ®Moth machine Faith in New Zealand. However, it is expected this will be issued when the tank for extra fuel, installed in the cabin of the monoplane for the Tasman crossing, has been removed.
A few weeks before the flight was begun the machine underwent the regular official inspection in Australia, and the certificate was renewed for six months. It was when the additional tank was fitted that the certificate was cancelled. The tank will be removed.
The airmen hope to visit Te Aroha for the aerial display to-morrow, and they may visit Rukuhia, near Hamilton, on Saturday, when a combined motor race meeting and flying display will be held. Later they will fly to Wellington, calling at Wanganui, New Plymouth and other centres on the way. There is a likelihood they will afterward visit the South Island.
A call on the Auckland deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, Was made by the airmen on Saturday morning. In congratulating the young fliers Mr. Entrican said he did so on behalf of the Citizens of Auckland and, he thought, the citizens of the whole Dominion. Afterward the two young men were issued with motor-car driving licenses, for they have been lent a car by an Auckland motor firm. Later they each bought two suits to supplement the clothes they wore on the flight. On Saturday afternoon they visited Mangere aerodrome and in the evening they made a stage appearance at the' Civic Theatre and later visited the Peter Pan Cabaret and a night club.
