TRACK AND STABLE

LIA FAIL’S GOOD FORM HORSES FOR FEILDING MEETING. KILTOWYN’S NARROW VICTORY. / (By “Hurry On.”) An English paper recently conducted a competition for naming a colt by Ragamuffin from Scarlet Runner. Its final report was: “We divide the prize among the eight' competitors who suggested “Nota Bene” (pronounced perhaps Not a Bean). Unlucky King Musk. King Musk is racing consistently but without any luck this season, having to he content with minor placings. His turn must come, and the big hack mile and a-quarter on the second day of the Ellerslie summer meeting should suit him. ' . Cherry King Promising.

Cherry King, who scored so decisively in the final event at Trentham on Labour bay, is reputed to be likely to more than hold his own in open company during the Christmas and New Year meetings. He figures in the Kowhai Hack Handicap at Feilding on Friday, and as the field is not particularly strong It would not be surprising to find him starting a hot favourite. A Good Chance.

The three winners ridden by L. J. Elba at the Takapuna meeting brought. his total for the current season to 36. With the Feilding and Woodville meetings Shortly it would be no surprise ..0 find him passing the 50 mark before the New Year. This would give him an excellent chance of passing the century before August 1.

May Race at Trentham. The three-year-old Fesscn, who was purchased by 0. Cox at Melbourne for Mrs W. D. Graham, has settled down Splendidly in his new quartern at Hawera. He may make his debut in New Zealand at the special meeting for the Duke of Gloucester at Trentham next month.

Only Just Won. \on the running in the Alison Cup on the first day of the Takapuna meeting Kiltowyn appeared the best of good things in the St, Andrew’s Handicap on Monday, with the Other two place-get-ters, Gay Marigold and Gay Blonde, out bf the way. The “good thing” materlal;tsed, but it was only by the narrowest of margins that he defeated CarfeX, who ran perhaps his best race this season, only going under by a head after being one of the leaders all the way. From a Martian Mare.

Velocipede, the Winner Of the two-year-old race at Te Rapa on the second day, is interesting, as he was bred in Australia, but comes of New Zealand stock. He is a brown colt by Rampion from Phillis Martian, a mare bred by Mr I. G. Dunean, by Martian from Philomel, by Birkenhead. Velocipede was bred by Mt. H. A. Tayldr, Of the Macquarie Stud, and Was Sold at the yearling sales for 180 guineas.

Half-brother to Peschiera. Another New Zealand-bred horse was returned a winner in Australia last week when Homer won the Culloden Stakes at the special meeting at Randwick in honour Of the Visit of the Duke Of Gloucester to Sydney. The two-year-old is by Iliad from the imported mare Quadrilateral, Who has thrown winners in Peschiera and Quarto, who filled second place in the Oaks at Flemington during the recent tup meeting. Homer, who Carries tile same colotirs as Quarto, won hiS race in good style and is evidently a promising, colt.

Making Good. When Lia Fail won two races on the Taranaki holiday circuit nCarty 12 months ago the big chestnut filly gave the impression that she Would Soon Win her way out Of hack class. However, het subsequent form in the autumn did not come up to expectations. She made her first appearance this season at the Waikato meeting just over a Week agd, when she filled a place each day. She did not start on the first day at Ellerslie but was produced in the final event oh Monday. Six pounds overweight Were put up to secure the Services Of L. J. Ellis, and she WaS sent out secdnd favourite on both machines. The capable rider never left the issue in doUbt, Lia Fail winning Very decisively. Her trainer, J. W. Cathro, has always, been of the opinion that she needed a strong, rider, and the result appears to bear this out. She is a four-year-old by .Chief Ruler from Miss Sphinx.

JOCKEY CLUR’S DECISION

IMPROVED BETTING FACILITIES.

The problem of the punter will be much simplified at the Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club. At a special meeting of the committee _on Monday it was decided to use a dividend barometer at the gathering. Instead of the number of tickets on each horse appearing on the dial the dividend that it is paying will appear instead. No longer will the racegoer have to make a series bf mental calculations to discover what his fancy is paying, for the information will be on the indicator in front of him. The present board on the totalisator at Hew Plymouth is exactly large enough to accommodate the two indicators, one for the win machine and the other for the place machine. The outstanding feature is its simplicity, the public being in full possession Of all information all the time. One of the features of this barometer and calculating, machine is that the machine can be made for either the win and place betting system or the 75-25 per cent, allocation of dividends. At present the clubs will have the opportunity of hiring the machine from the Wellington Racing Club, but it seems most probable that its assured success in Taranaki will prompt the racing clubs in this province to later buy their own machines.

NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK

LITTLE FAST GALLOPING.

CANDIDATES FOR FEILDING.

There was not a great deal of work on the New Plymouth track yesterday morning, but the horses with engagements at Feilding on Friday were galloped. The tracks were fiery after the recent dry spell and all the work took place on the plough. Merry Way and Amyril were associated over five furlongs in Im 4s, both mares moving pleasingly. Merry Way will contest the Fitzroy Hack at Feilding on Saturday, when with 8.2 she will not be without prospects. Davistock and Aussie Ra were not extended to run the same distance in Im 6-. The pair did their task in good style and should be in splendid order for Friday. H. Dulieu did not return from Levin with Sporting Song and Ythan, but proceeded to Feilding.

Glen vane and General Quex covered the last two furlongs of a circuit in 24 4-ss, both hitting out in good style,
