CRICKET FIXTURES

PROGRAMME AT CHRISTMAS,

VICTORIA COLLEGE MATCH, “OFF.”

While the Hawke Cup is a valuable asset to any cricket association for the interest it stimulates in the game and the consequent improvement in finances, it entails uncertainty in the arranging of games other than those in defence of the cup. Because of this the match between the Victoria College touring team and a North Taranaki representative team, always a popular Christmas fixture with players and spectators alike, Will have to be cancelled. The Victoria College Club in a letter to the management committee of the Northern Division of the Taranaki Cricket Association, which met last night, applied for a game ori January 1 and 2. Owing to the necessity for keeping open Pukekura Park in the holiday dates for possible Hawke Cup matches the association was forced to decline the application. Tbe Hawke Cup may be lost by then, and the date would be open for the fixture, but as the Victoria College club was arranging its programme as soon as possible the probability of obtaining a last-minute arrangement was remote.

The association instructed the secretary to reply to the effect that the possession of the cup forced the association to decline with regret the application, but that it would be pleased to play should the cup be lost and the game be made possible.
