NAPIER HARBOUR

EXTENSION OF BREAKWATER.

CONTRACT FOR WORK LET.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Nov. 26.

An important step in the programme of developing a deep water harbour for Hawkes Bay has been taken by the Napier Harbour Board, a contract having been let for the extension of the existing breakwater structure by a distance of 424 feet. The successful contractor is Mr. E. S. Brookes, a well-knpwn builder and harbour contractor of Tauranga. The price at which the work is to be carried out is £47,063 17s 6d. There were five tenders, and the board accepted the lowest.

A number of works are at present in progress connected with the development of the port, including the excavation of over two acres at the • approach to the new wharves, so as to bring the land in this vicinity down to the same level as the wharves themselves, the dredging of the harbour bottom where the first of the two new concrete wharves are to be erected) and the construction of a new block of yards and a railway shunting area.

The commencement of the extension of the breakwater itself will mark a definite step towards the realisation of more' efficient and economical methods of handling the produce of the province. The contract price is well within the engineer’s estimate.

Work o:. the breakwater construction will commence early in the New Year. The time for the completion is three years.
