FILM POPULARITY
PLEBISCITE IN GREAT BRITAIN.
NORMA SHEARER AND ARLISS.
London, Nov. 22,
Over 100,000 film fans throughout Britain replied to a questionnaire asking which were the 50 most popular stars. It was surprising that Hollywood stars are still dominant, despite the big British film push in the last 18 months. Jack Hulbert and Grade Fields were beaten by George Arliss, Clark Gable, Wallace Beery, Clive Brook, Robert Montgomery and Ronald Coleman among the men, and by Norma Shearer, Marie Dressier, Greta Garbo, Kay Francis, Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn among the women.
Norma Shearer is still on top, but Greta Garbo has risen to third, owing to “Queen Christina,” and George Arliss has displaced Ronald Coleman as head of the men.
Males go to see Marlene Dietrict, Kay Francis and Jean Harlow, while women are attracted by Greta Garbo and Katharine Hepburn. Curiously enough, while Garbo is the third most popular she is also the second best hated star, having Mae West, Jean Harlow and Joan Crawford as companions in unpopularity.
Douglas Fairbanks, senr., Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin failed to reach the first 50.
