WESTERN PARK DEFEATED VICTORY ON FIRST INNINGS. GOOD DISPLAYS OF BATTING. Ewart, with seven wickets down for 78, carried on Western Park’s first innings. ’ At 79 Duff was dismissed by Harris. Quickfall, who followed, did not last long, but Stapleton and Ewart added 11 before Stapleton drove one fiercely back to Harris, who held it well, the score being 93, 23 behind Old Boys total. With a good ball, Richardson was bowled by. Quickfall for six with the total at 11. Gilbert fell l.b.w. to. E. Spedding at 22 after a dogged display. He gave a bright exhibition for 48. Some of his drives through the covers had plenty of power behind them while his defence was sound. Stevens was caught off J. Spedding and Kirwin and Clegg bowled by the same man. Christensen began to score at once and in his short stay at the wickets rattled on 22 not out, hitting five fours. He showed a strong off drive which gained most of his runs. Lash, who was the other man in at the closing of tlie innings, scored 41. He batted more carefully than usual, his total including 21 singles. J. Spedding might have been brought on before 100 runs were on the board. With an hour to go Western Park started off rapidly, 17 runs coming off two overs, and one wicket falling, that of G. Ewart. Quickfall also was the victim of Kirwin when the total was 27. Until 59 was reached Wilson partnered E. Spedding, who was scoring with refreshing freedom off all the bowlers. Of the 32 runs in the partnership Wilson scored three. Parkinson followed, increasing the scoring rate. E. Spedding with powerful back shots was frequently finding the boundary. When he was 51 and the total 89, he was bowled by Christensen after a fine display of quick scoring with safe shots. When J. Spedding was bowled by Richardson stumps were drawn.
