ROWING EVENTS
COLLIER TROPHIES DECIDED.
N. FREWIN’S TEAM SUCCESSFUL.
The races for the trophies given by Mr. H. Collier were rowed on Saturday by the New Plymouth Rowing Clubhand produced some exciting finishes. The course was from the end of the breakwater in between the wharves, a distance of approximately three-quarters of a mile. The results were:— First heat: N. Frewin (str.), J. King (3), T. Murdock (2), R. Rosser (bow), P. McKay (cox) defeated L. Billing (str.), H. Billing (3), L. Erb (2), W. Lowrie (bow), E. Clow (cox). From an even start Frewin’s crew, who swung together very well, drew away to win by two lengths. Second heat: F. Barlow (str.), J. Mills (3), M. Keenan (2), J. Durdle (bow), P. McKay (cox) defeated J. Donaldson (str.), L. Rutherford (3), R. Roper (2), C. Gay lard (bow), E. Clow (cox). This provided the best finish of the day. At the end of the Moturoa wharf Donaldson was leading by about three-quarters of a length and appeared to have the race in hand, but Barlow’s crew put in a surprisingly • good finish and won by two feet. ’ Third heati.N. Frewin’s crew gained the lead at the start, and although Burgess’ crew rowed very hard to- come up with the heavier crew it was unable to make up the leeway, Frewin’s crew winning by a length and a-half. Final: N. Frewin’s crew defeated F. Barlow’s crew. Frewin gained an advantage at the start and held about half a length’s lead until the end of the wharf, when he drew further away to win by a length and a-half.
