CHASE OVER ROOF TOPS
WELLINGTON CLUB RAID POLICE ARREST 39 PERSONS. SCENES LIKE IN A MOVIE PLAY. CHARGES UNDER GAMING ACT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Scenes reminiscent of a movie thriller were witnessed at Wellington last night when detectives raided Menzoni’s Club in Harris Street and made 39. arrests undfer the Gaming Act. According to one of the men caught in the raid someone shouted “The cops are here!” and confusion feigned. Police chased would-be escapees along the roof-tops and into neighbouring buildings. A number of patrons of the club arrived on the scene while the excitement Was at its height and demanded admittance. It took some time to convince them that a raid Was in progress, but, when the real state of affairs dawned upon them, they lost no time in putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the building.
