OPENING OF THE SEASON HELD.
CREWS CONTEST SHORT RACE.
The official opening of the Clifton Rowing Club was held on Saturday afternoon. . . . The Mayor, Mr. J. Hine, m declaring the season open, apologised for the imavoidable absence of the president, Mr. W. R. Johns. The sport of rowing, stated Mr. Hine, was a sport in New Zealand least open to professionalism and was a clean, healthy pastime. Mr. H. Spurdie, secretary, replied. Three crews competed in a short race, which resulted as follows; — First heat: F. Olsson (stroke), C. D. Tate, R. Kendrick and E. Blair defeated O. A. Keith (stroke), A. Rowe, K. Keith and T. Stockman by about a length. Final: F. Olsson’s crew defeated McFarlane (stroke), O. Sampson, T. W. Sampson and D. Locke by half a length. ■ Tire first set of trophies will be competed for early in December. Donations were made by Messrs. J. Hine and R. Gribbon.
