4A RELIEF SCHEME
EFFECT OF CANCELLATION. 16 HAWERA CONTRACTS INVOLVED The cancellation on January 5 of the 4A scheme of unemployment relief will affect 16 men in the. Hawera district, and concern was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, when seen by the Daily News yesterday. Much good work, he said, had been accomplished in the past in gorse-grub-bing, draining and other developmental work by farmers who, normally, would not have been able to pay the full rates of pay. There were 19 men so employed at the present time, and of this number 16 would have to terminate their engagements on January 5. The contracts for the other three men would expire prior to that date, so they would not be affected. Farmers employing labour under the scheme are subsidised by the Unemployment Board to the extent of 10s per week for single men and 15s per week for married men, plus 2s 6d per week for each child under 16 years of age, with a maximum of 255. The minimum contribution by the farmer himself was fixed at 5s per man.
