SUTHERLAND WINS GOLF

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS o TARANAKI CONTEST AT HAWERA. BRILLIANT RECORD FOR COURSE. D. V. Sutherland, a young Inglewood player, became champion of champions of Taranaki golf for the season by his two great rounds in the contest played at Hawera at the week-end. His rounds of 77 and 70 were four strokes better than N. P. Green, Stratford, and his afternoon round, brilliantly played, established a course record for competition play. . • Heavy rain late in the morning and in the early afternoon threatened to spoil the golf, but the players kept scores down in great style. The title was decided on two stroke rounds. A match between North and South Taranaki, played on medal handicap, was won by South, 1 up- , ' n Sutherland’s afternoon round, as well as being two strokes better than par, was a perfect score. Sutherland also won the 36-holes medal competition with 147—8 —139. The visitors were welcomed by Mr. S. C. Tonks, president of the Hawera club, who also presented the cup to the winner. Sutherland’s performance had been brilliant, he said. Mr. F. Quin on behalf of the northern clubs thanked the Hawera club for its hospitality and congratulated it on the course improvements, which included perfect greens. MEN DEFEAT WOMEN NEW PLYMOUTH SEASON ENDS. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Perfect weather favoured the New Plymouth Golf Club at Waiwakaiho on Saturday on the occasion of the annual match between the women and the men. Every game was sternly contested, 75 per cent, of the matches going to the last hole., The early returns were all in favour of the women, but the men prevailed at the finish by 16 games to 10, while seven were all square. At the presentation of trophies ceremony the president, Dr. E. A. Walker, congratulated the club on its sound financial position, which was highly creditable considering the difficult times. He drew attention to the fine scoring by many players during the year and paid a tribute to the work of the captain, Mr. F. S. Johns, and the secretary, Mr. C. H. Wynyard. He also praised the work of the caretaker, Mr. Saunders, and his assistant, Mr. Jeffries, and Mrs. Saunders. Mrs. Walker presented the following prizes: Senior championship, G. M. Chong 1, T. A. Thomson 2; intermediate championship, L. J. Mander 1, J. Davies 2; junior championship, L. H. Johnson 1, J. Cliff 2; limit championship, B. H. Gray 1, G. Champion 2; best gross score, G. M. Chong and A. S. Hasell; Standish Cup, I. G. Parker; Medley Cup, G. M. Chong; Coltman Cup, J. Davies; Fisher Cup, Miss Taylor and J. Davies; Weston trophy, G. M. Chong and F. J. White; captains trophy, A. Thorne and G. E. Jago. Mr. Johns thanked members for their loyal support during the season. The year had been pleasant and much credit was due to the women’s committee, he said. He hoped that in view of the club’s improved position it would be able to do away with sheep before long. A golf course of five holes is planned by several members of the Patea Golf Club for summer play in the large paddock which lies between the Beach Road and the Patea River. The area possesses many of the features most desired in a course that will develop a variety of strokes and the work of clearing out patches of lupin and scrub is proceeding.
