RECORD EVENT OPENS TO-MORROW. PROMINENT BREEDERS ENTERED. This year’s Egmont A. and P. Show, which has drawn record entries, opens to-morrow and will be continued on. Thursday. Everything points to it being the outstanding show held by the association. Prominent breeders will be present from all over the North Island to try conclusions with the Taranaki exhibitors, who have risen to the occasion with the result that local entries this year are a record. 1 Visiting exhibitors in the cattle section include the well known breeders Messrs. O. A. Cadwallader (Greytown), J. Parker and C. A. Knutson (Carterton) and the Stratford High School in the Friesian section. In the Ayrshire section Mr. D. Buchanan (Palmerston North) is represented by a strong team. There are also W. Hall, Andrew Weir and R. A. Bent (New Plymouth), Mrs. W. G. Shannon, Messrs. W. G. Shamion, R. L. Hom (Mahawatu), L. C. D’ath (Wanganui), H. Salway, H. C. Sampson, A. E. Western, G. H- Bell, P. J. Pietersen, E. J. Kirkwood and Truby King are well known exhibitors in the Jersey section. The dairy cow class has drawn the record entry of 34 and this will be an outstanding section. The milking Shorthorns arc one of the features of the show and exhibitors have come from far afield. Messrs. R. D. Duxfield and G. D. Hall (Waikato) have exceptionally strong teams. In the horse section outside breeders exhibiting are Messrs. J. C. Baird (Hastings), L. Williamson (Marton), H. Wilson (Bulls), A. W. Parsons (Waipukurau), B. Bousfield (Waipukurau), R. Townsend (New Plymouth), T. Lupton, G. Lupton (Waverley), S. Besley (Patea), Collins (Stratford) and Mrs. A. Scales (Masterton). In the sheep section many exhibitors with a Dominion-wide reputation in the show ring are competing, some of these being Ellis Bros. (Bulls), J. Hunter (Fordell); A. L. Wheeler (Marton), J. F. McKelvie (Bulls), L. Elliot (Kai Iwi), W. A. Tod (Hawkes Bay), J. Stringfellow (Greytown) and R. Farley (Wanganui). The pig section has drawn every notable breeder for many miles, including Messrs. G. M. Whitelock, D. Buchanan, R. Webb, J. McLinden, E. P. Nielsen, (Manawatu), Cheltenham Co-op. Dairy Co. (Feilding), H. E. Fieldhouse (Rongotea), A. R. Gudopp (New Plymouth), Meadowvale Piggeries, H. M. Lepper (Midhirst), A. B. Olliver (Lepperton), W. Boddie (Mangamingi), W. J. Freeth, P-. Weeden (Waitara)., H. A. Hamblyn. (Bell Block), J. Morgan (Levin) and H. Parsons (Patea).

An outbreak of fire was discovered below the decking of the Patea town bridge shortlyi after 10 o’clock yesterday. The fire, the cause of which can only be surmised, was being fanned by the breeze, and was already melting the tarsealing. The attention of men fishing on the river-bank was drawn to the fire and they carried water -from the river to extinguish it. Serious dislocation of traffic would have occurred if prompt action had not been taken. Hawera Poultry Prices. Smith and Trim, Ltd., Hawera, report the following prices realised at their sale on Saturday: Fowls, Is, Is 3d, Is 6d, Is Bd, 2s, 2s 3d; roosters, Is 3d, Is 6d; ducks, 2s, 2s Id; two-month-old pullets (sex linkage), ss; White Leghorn, ss; Light Sussex, 5s 6d; bantams, 6d, 9d; duck and ducklings, 6s; hen and twelve chicks, 12s 6d; young cockerels, 3d, 4d, Is, Is 2d. Sixth Successive Win. The Manaia grey six, which won the Ollernshaw Totem Pole at the South Taranaki scout contests with 648 points comprised Sixer B. Miller, Second Sixer W. Kitt, Cubs G. Craig, B. Reardon, G. Cottom and A. Reardon. Cubmaster D. Hayter and his cubs are to be congratulated on their fine achievement in winning the totem pole for the sixth year in succession. The totem pole is a fine oak standard holding proudly a head of a wolf with a silver presentation plate. Building of Baths. After judging in the calf-rearing competitions of the South Taraniaki Boys and Girls’ clubs had been carried out yesterday at the Meremere school, an inspection was made of the school’s new swimming baths. Entirely built by voluntary labour and subscription, the baths have a concrete .ottom and have resulted in some dozens of people in the district, as well as the majority of the older pupils at the school, learning to swim for the first time. The cost was about £7O and the work has been of immense benefit to the district. Improvement to School. Improvements carried out recently to the Mokoia school by an energetic committee, have had the effect of transforming the area. All along the front, a concrete wall has been built, new wire netting erected for the tennis courts, and general ground improvements carried out. 'Phe cost has been estimated at £64 and the work was done by local labour. Armistice Tea Held. Wives and mothers of soldiers were entertained at Hawera yesterday by members of the Women’s National Reserve in commemoration of Armistice Day. The Mayoress, Mrs. J. E. Campbell, president, welcomed the guests, to each of whom a posy was given. There were nearly 100 present, including three war nurses, Mrs. Allan Evans, Miss B. Young and Miss C. Hunter (matron of the Hawera Hospital). An apology was received from another- war nurse, Mrs. J. Y. Hall. An interesting address covering the early history of the Reserve at Hawera was given by Miss D. Corrigan. There was a programme of songs by Misses C. Reilly and D. Gilmore, elocutionary items by Mesdames B. C. Bennett and J. A. McCallum, and a piano solo by Mrs. P. O. Veale, who also played the accompaniments. “The Firefly” Cast The cast for “The Firefly,” the comedy opera to be performed at Hawera next week by the Hawera Amateur Operatic Society, is:—Nina, Miss K.
