CROWN TENANTS’ RENTS
IMPROVING PAYMENTS FIFTY PER CENT. ADVANCE SHOWN. NO “WHOLESALE REMISSIONS.” MINISTER'S DENIAL OF RUMOUR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, Nov. 12. Questioned to-day as to the accuracy of allegations in some quarters that wholesale remissions of arrears of rent are being made to Crown tenants throughout the Dominion, Mr. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, said that the report was inaccurate. He admitted that a considerable amount in remissions had been made, but remissions . were allowed to accumulate and remissions were not granted until finally approved by the Minister. In many instances remissions had been refused. Mr. Ransom said he was pleased to state that the payments of rent were now coming in most satisfactorily. Last year there was a decided improvement of 25 per cent, over the previous year, and so far for this year the position had shown a 50 per cent, improvement. “We are trying to meet Crown tenants as reasonably as we can, but in no sense are we making a wholesale remission,” he added.
