NEW COURTS OPENED
DOUGLAS CLUB’S ACHIEVEMENT. DANCE HELD IN EVENING. Last Thursday was a red letter day for the Douglas Tennis Club, the occasion being the official opening of the two new tar-seal courts. Members of the Stratford, Makahu and Tututawa clubs visited Douglas, and the two courts were occupied continuously from early morning until late in the afternoon. Good play resulted. Mr. J. Walter, president, extended a hearty welcome to visitors. He referred to the big undertaking in the excavation of the high bank in preparation for the courts, and thanked all who had helped to make the new courts. Mr. Wilmshurst, patron of the club, congratulated it on the work members had done. He said the courts were a great asset to the district socially as well as physically. He wished the . club a very successful season, and after Mrs. Wilmshurst had served the first ball he declared the courts open. Mr. A. Walter, on behalf of the school committee, referred to the great privilege the school children had in having these excellent courts to play on. He then called on the children to give the club three cheers. Mr. Boyle, Stratford, congratulated Douglas on its achievement in providing the two courts. A dance-was held in the evening. A record crowd attended from Stratford and surrounding districts. Vinsen’s band played the music. The hall was decorated in the club colours, black and white. A novelty dance, “The Mystery Train,” caused much fun and excitement. When all the passengers had alighted except Mrs. A. Walter and Mr. D. Bell, this couple proved the winners. Messrs. J. Walter, C. Wilmshurst and A. Smith were the masters of ceremonies.
