GAY WHARF SCENE
RETURN FROM THE CENTENARY. TRIBUTES TO MELBOURNE PEOPLE By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. One of the gayest scenes possible in the intercolonial tourist traffic was presented by the Monowai when, with her decks vividly sunlit, she tied up at her Wellington berth this afternoon with 331 passengers aboard, more than 100 of whom represented part of the New Zeareturning from the Mel■.rtenary festivities
The passengers were enthusiastic over the way Melbourne nad “turned it on” for their entertainment. The one general complaint made was about the weather. In the five weeks to the time the Monowai left, it was stated, there were barely seven completely fine days. On Melbourne Cup day the rain came down “in buckets.” “The celebrations were a great success. They were wonderfully well arranged and revealed a great deal of organising capacity on the part of the Melbourne people,” commented Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., Mayor of Christchurch. Mr. •Sullivan was one of the official guests of the Centenary Council. “The illv—• —•‘ions and decorations were very successful. In fact I would not be pr'red if they constituted the greatest electrical display in the world’s history,” he continued. “Both by the council and by the Nations] -od Empire. Centenary Association, which ’ m-d- myself and other visiting members of Parliament its guests, we were given every possible courtesy. It’-’ ' also that every visitc w. ' agree with me that nothing was left undone by the city in its consideration for all visitors from New Zealand.
