BIG DAY AT CENTENARY
SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS AIRCRAFT’S THRILLING DISPLAY. DUKE OF GLOUCESTER’S BUSY DAY. AIR RACE PRIZE PRESENTATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.0 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 11. Saturday was the biggest day of the centenary programme so far and many important events were run simultaneously. The aerial pageant at Laverton attracted 100,000 spectators, who witnessed a thrilling display of aircraft for peace and war, including the bombing of a model ship erected at the aerodrome. Winning pilots in the air race attended the air pageant and were presented with the prize cheques and trophies by the Duke of Gloucester. In conjunction with the pageant a giant barbacue was held at which 27 bullocks were roasted over open fires and distributed to visitors. At the showgrounds naval, military and air forces gave a gymkana which included spectacular displays by cavalry, infantry, artillery, armoured cars and naval gunners. The Duke of Gloucester had a busy day attending these events and the Flemington races. He was entertained at a dinner in the town hall by the Soldiers’ League. More than 600 soldiers attended.
London won the rowing race for the Victorian eights championship over two and a-half miles on the Yarra on Saturday by eight lengths. University and Mercantile followed. London led from start to finish. The visiting crew is, however, ineligible to hold the championship. Two games in the polo handicap were played on Saturday. South Australia B (9) defeated New Zealand (7) 16-15. Grigg scored four goals, Hennessy two and Gould two. Hall again replaced Johnston. Victoria A defeated South Australia A.
