WAITARA HARBOUR

WALL EXTENSION COMPLETED. ENGINEER’S REPORT TO BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held on Friday night. Those present were Messrs J. Hine (chairman), E. C. Jones, J. Vickery, H. Spurdie, D. T. Wiley, I. G. Prichard and W. R. Johns. Mr. C. F. Dowsett reported that the extension to the north wall had been completed and the advantages were already apparent. On the north side the sand was approximately level with the top of the wall and on the south side the beach was gradually filling up. His estimate for the work was £4lB and the cost was £415 5s 4d. All plant had been restored to the board’s depots at the south side of the river. Part of the old wall showed signs of scour, which had been repaired with - boulders and concrete. Repairs to the south wall would be attended to when the present large d'-'osits of sand were reduced and the position made more accessible. The harbourmaster, Capt. T. J. Wood, reported that the bar had been in very good condition since the fresh in the river early in October. The channel went straight out and the depth of water on the bar during October was Bft 6in at high water neap tides and 11 feet at high water spring tides. Sand has accumulated where the erosion had been occurring -t the south wall foundation blocks. This part of the wall would be clear after a fresh in the river. The draft balance sheet for the ‘year ended September 31 was presented by the secretary.
