TARANAKI GOLF PLAY

MRS. CLARK CHAMPION NEW PLYMOUTH WOMEN’S FINAL. WIN BY COMFORTABLE MARGIN. Displaying golf of a high standard, Mrs. G. H. Clark,, won the New Plymouth Ladies’ Golf Club’s senior championship at Waiwakaiho on Saturday morning when she defeated Mrs. L. R. Curtis in the final 5 up and 4 to play. Though Mrs. Curtis made a weak start and played much below her usual form, this did not detract from Mrs. Clark’s ■ performance. She played splendid golf throughout, doing the first nine holes in 41, and being level foura for the five holes played on the inward journey. Mrs. Curtis commenced badly. Her tee shot at the first was half topped and her third travelled only a few yards. Mrs. Clark after a fine drive, was only eight feet from the flag with her third and secured a win with a 'five after Mrs. Curtis had made a valiant attempt to hole a twelve-feet putt. Two perfect woods saw Mrs. Clark only about ten feet from the flag at the next and her four put her two up. She increased this to three up at the tnird when Mrs! Curtis again failed with her approach. The next was halved in bogey fives and then-Mrs. Curtis won her first- hole when''Mrs. Clark failed with her pitch to the fifth green. The Dell was halved in correct mrees. Mrs. Curtis was nearly over the cliff with her tee shot at the seventh, but she staged a great to fail with her third. Mrs. Clark was lucky with her third, which bounced over the end of the bunker to find the green, and she won the hole with a five. She appeared liktelv to increase her lead at the next when her opponent was very short with her third, but a clever run-up to within a, foot of tlie flag enabled Mrs. Curtis to snatch a half. She played a line shot to the green at Roadside but her approach putt was too strong and Mrs. Clark, pitching neatly over the bunker, sank a good putt lor a three and a win, making her four up at the turn. Both played the long tenth in flawless fashion for halves in fives. Both had 'chances at the eleventh but failed with four-feet putts. Mrs. Curtis was short trom the tee at the twelfth but approached well to obtain a half after Mrs. Clark had lipped the cup for a two. Mrs. Clark hit a splendid drive from the 13th tee, the ball coming to rest on the .edge of the green. She sank a good putt for a birdie three, which made her dormy. She made no errors about. her shot to the green at Moses and obtained a three and a half to win the game.' Mr. F. S. Johns was referee. WAIWAKAIHO CAPTAIN’S TROPHY. VERY HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. The fine condition of the New Plymouth Golf Club course at. Waiwakaiho was reflected in the good scoring in the captain’s trophy four-ball best ball on Saturday. There was one card of seven up, while scores of 6 up were numerous, but were not good enough. A. Thorne and G. E. Jago romped home with the great score of 10 up. Thome, wh<y was in great form, had a stroke round- of 73. EVEN SCORING AT FITZROY. RESULT OF MEDAL HANDICAP.
