DEAD-HEAT IN ROWING

HOFFMAN CUP AT NEW PLYMOUTH FREWIN’S CREW PERFORMS WELL. The Hoffman Cup was rowed for by the New Plymouth club as far as was possible on Saturday under ideal conditions. The crews in the final rowed a dead-heat. Details are:— First heat: F. Barlow (str.), H. Billing, M. Keenan, J. Durdle and E. Clow (cox) defeated L. Rutherford (str.), L. Erb, R. Roper, T. Murdock and P. McKay (cox). Barlow gained an advantage at the start, and rowing a good stroke with a strong catch and leg drive led throughout to win comfortably by a length and a-half. Second heat: N. Frewin (str.), S. Billing, C. Gaylard, R. Rosser and P. McKay (cox) defeated J. King (str.), J. Donaldson, A. Burgess, W. Lowrie and B. Erb (cox). The crews got away together to a good start, but the coxwains allowed the boats to draw too close together, resulting in the oars striking. This did not deter the crews, which rowed neck and neck until the line, where Frewin gained a victory by two feet.

Third heat: N. Frewin (str.), S. Billing, C. Gaylard, R. Rosser and B. Erb (cox) defeated L. Rutherford (str.), L. Erb, R. Roper, P. Healy and P. McKay (cox). Rutherford lost an advantage at the start but managed to keep up with Frewin until the bow swivel was broken, which proved too big a handicap, Frewin winning by a length. » Final: F. Barlow’s crew dead-heated with N. Frewin’s crew. The crews got away well from the start and Frewin was leading by a canvass at the end of the/wharf, but Barlow spurted strongly from there to cross the line on equal terms.

The final is to be re-rowed to-day at 6 p.m. Frewin’s crew put up a fine performance, rowing three races of approximately three-quarters of a mile in succession.
