IN MEMORY OF POMARE
MONUMENT AT WAITARA FIGURE OF MAORI MINISTER. THE WORK TO BEGIN AT ONCE. SIMPLE BUT IMPOSING DESIGN.
The erection at Waitara of a monument to Sir Maui Pomare is to be begun soon. Surmounting a pedestal base will be a full-size figure statue of Sir Maui. Work on this has been started by a Christchurch artist. It is expected that the memorial will be unveiled next year. No grant from the Government was received for the work. The whole design is simple but dignified. On the concrete foundation will be the grey Aberdeen granite base supporting the entablature on which the statue will stand. The granite base will be 9ft. 6in. high and the statue 9ft. As the foundation which is to be built over the present tomb is three feet above the ground level the total height will be 21 feet 6 inches. The granite column is circular, with four smaller columns at each comer of the entablature. These are to be in red granite in contract to the grey. The work is to be carried out in accordance with plans prepared by Mr. G. A. J. Hart, Christchurch, and will be done by Mr. W. F. Short, New Plymouth, under the supervision of Messrs. Griffiths and Stephenson, New Plymouth. The statue is being modelled by Mr. Trethewey, Christchurch. The contract has been let by the Taranaki Maori Trust Board, and the work will probably take about twelve months.
