FIVE FAVOURITES WIN

DESCRIPTION OF RACING PUBLIC SELECTIONS ACCURATE. DIVIDENDS EXTREMELY SMALL.

' (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Five win favourites and two win sec- . ond favourites were successful at the conclusion of the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-day, and the dividends were again extremely small. Master Norval was victorious in the Plumpton Handicap and Gay Blonde scored decisively in the Avondale Guineas.

Thespis Leads All the Way. Only four started in the Grey Lynn Hurdles and the favourite, Thespis, led throughout to win easily. Thespis was very confidently ridden at the finish, and that was the only reason why King Win was enabled to be within three-quarters of a length of him. Glenade was a moderate third and Silver Division was badly beaten. King Win is likely to improve.

Favourite Left Standing. The favourite Fairfax was left: standing at the start in the Nursery Handicap and took no part in the race. The second favourite, Gay Sheik, was successful, but he had only a ne:'.: to spare from Triune, with Velocipede half a length away third and Gay Acre some lengths back fourth. Velocipede and Triune were the ’ leaders most of the way, and they stayed solidly at the finish. Both are owiled by Mr. W. H. Maria, who purchased them at Sydney last Easter. . Triune is a fine big colt by Tippled from Trice, and does not look nearly ready yet.

Silver Jubilee Solid. The favourite, Silver Jubilee, was responsible for a solid performance in winning the Moun. Albert Handicap. He was slow to begin, but with a brilliant burst of speed was just behind the leaders, Princess Star and Prince Acre, at the end of a furlong. Confidently ridden at the end, Silver Jubilee won by a head from Prince Acre. Miss Lu finished well to be third and Princess Star was fourth. Silver, Jubilee is good and should soon win his way out of the hack class. f • Master Norval’s Fine Finish.

It was with a fine finishing run that Master Norval won the Plumpton Handicap, coming from near the rear at the turn to win by three-parts of a length from Royal Artist, who was third into the straight behind Baroscope and Musquil. Musquil battled on solidly for third and paid double figures for a place. Killadar, who lost some ground at the start, Carfex and Lord Vai were in a bunch behind the placed hors_?s, with Aga Khan next. Master Norval has improved with his recent racing and finished too solidly for Royal Artist. Killadar was finishing strongly arid should be a possibility for a handicap shortly. Aga Khan looked likely at the but weakened at the last.

Gay Blonde Wins Easily. Only three started in the Avondale Guineas and the favourite, Gay Blonde, won easily. She followed Rerepai to the home turn and then went on to beat him decisively by two lengths. Namakia, ridden in behind, was never able to make, any impression and was. two and a-half lengths away. Gay Blonde has improved lately and showed definite superiority. She is the second successive winner of the., race owned by Mr.- G. Courtney, trained by ,P. E. Pope and ridden by A. Tinker, who. "were successful with her full sister, Gay Sheila, last year.

Sinking Fund Repeats Success. The first day’s winner, Sinking Fund, repeated his success in the President’s Handicap. Sinking Fund was in front practically throughout and won well from British Columbia, who was with him most of the .vay. Lady Kyra ran a good race for third and Rereatu was fourth. Sinking Fund is right at the top of his form. On the other hand British Columbia is not quite at his best yet, and will do better. Rereatu had every chance but was steadied by his weight.

Kelly Scores Decisively. The win favourite, Kelly, scored very decisively in the New Lynn Handicap. He followed King Brierly, Nun Nicer, Gold Musk, Safari and Bonny Gay into the straight and finished very resolutely to win by a length from King Brierly. Nun Nicer was a creditable third and First Lap finished strongly to be fourth, ahead of Bonny Gay and Aubretia. Kelly’s performance was impressive, as he was badly checked when attempting to go through on the inside at the distance.

Gay Marigold Big Favourite. Gay Marigold was a pronounced favourite for the Nihotapu Handicap and she finished strongly to win well from King Mestor, who also made a good effort in the run home. Psychologist set a solid pace but he tired badly in the straight and finished last. Whakapara was prominent at the turn hut weakened at the end.
