TE KAUWHATA LAND SALE.

A projected sale of Government property which will be of more than passing public interest was recently announced by advertisement appearing in this paper. The property referred to is the residue of the original Waerenga experimental farm, better known to the present generation by its later name, the Te Kauwhata horticultural station. ’ The property, which is situated on the banks of the Waikato, a few miles south of Mercer, originally comprised several thousand acres of land, which centuries ago were evidently clothed in kauri trees. Ample evidence of this is provided by the large perfectly preserved kauri tree trunks that are still to be found in the swamps. The thriving township of Te Kauwhata, and the prosperous appearance of the farms of the district—a great deal of which is due to the activities of the sta-tion-bears evidence that the original project served its purpose very satisfactorily. One of the station’s most important demonstrations was by way of proving the suitability of the land for the production of wine-making and table grapes. Now practically every settler in the district has a vineyard of greater or lesser extent, and the fame of the Te Kauwhata grape has spread beyond the confines of the Auckland province. The farm developmental activities having been completed, the Government feels that the station has served its purpose, and has, therefore, decided to offer the homestead area, together with the vineyard, cellar, wine stocks and established trade, to a suitable buyers as a going concern.
