CYCLING AT KAPONGA

NO LIABILITY FOR BICYCLES. BREWER WINS WEEKLY RACE. The management committee of the Kaponga League Cycle Club met recently when matters in connection with the forthcoming circular road race were mentioned. A discussion took place regarding the recent accident at the conclusion of one of the weekly road races, an account for the damage to one of the rider’s cycles being presented to the committee. It was decided to pay the account in this instance but that in future the club would not be responsible for any like damage nor would it hold itself in any way responsible for accidents to riders or pedestrians.

' The club’s road race on Saturday afternoon was twice round the Palmer Road block and saw a close finish, Brewer getting home by a length from R. Edgecombe, with B. Williams a length away third. W. Lister was close up fourth, Brewer and Edgecombe were the back markers and fastest time was made by Brewer, who took 63m 56s for the journey. A consolation race for the boys round the stock road was won by Fitzgerald, Dorflinger being second and Keheley third. A summary of the points for the Bocock Cup gives Brewer the lead with 19 points, R. Edgecombe second with 17 and B. Williams next with 14 points. The races for this cup will conclude with a race round the Duthie Road block, 19 miles, on October 27. Testing of Milk. Through Mr. J. D. Anderson, recently appointed to succeed Mr. H. R. Denize at Hawera, the Department of Agriculture advised the Hawera Borough Council last night that it was proposed to make biological tests for tuberculosis of all milk supplied to Hawera dairies. The Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, said it was satisfactory to know this was being done. Wickets at Park. An application from the South Taranaki cricket division to have the three wickets at King Edward Park, Hawera, rolled and watered for two hours on two days of each week was refused by the borough council last night. It was decided, however, that borough employees should cut and mark the wickets each week. Church as Hall. Difficulty in securing domestics for the men’s ward at the Hawera hospital was reported to the board yesterday by Miss C. Hunter, the matron. “Whether it is a shortage of maids or because of the lesser wages paid in comparison with hotels I do not know,” said Miss Hunter, “but the objection raised by the few who have inquired is that they do not care to work in a men’s ward.
