MATCH PLAY IN TITLE CONTESTS. AMATEURS AND PROFESSIONALS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 15. Fine conditions prevailed for the commencement .of the match play stages of the Australian amateur and professional golf championships at the Royal Sydney course at Rose Bay. The sixteen amateurs who qualified in the open championship on Saturday figured in 36-hole play, results of which were:— Amateur Championship. P. Hughes defeated G. Thompson 5 up and 4. A. Waterson defeated J. Allerton 2 up. M. Ryan (Victoria) defeated P. Ellis 6 up and 5. T. McKay defeated H. Williams (Victoria) • 2 up and 1. E. Apperley defeated G. Armstrong 3 up and 2. J. Ferrier defeated L. Nettlefold (Tasmania) 3 up and 2. R. Bettington defeated D. Esplin 4 up and 3. H. Hattersley defeated O. Meares 4 up and 3. Professional Championship. D. Soutar defeated C. Brown (Queensland) at the 37th. J. Patterson defeated J. Cohen 4 up and 3. M. Kelly defeated E. Bolger 2 up and 1. V. Richardson defeated T. Burke 2 up and 1. G. Gray defeated T. Heard 4 up and 2. W. Bolger defeated N. Von Nida (Queensland) 1 up. E. Naismith (Victoria) defeated F. Eyre 6 up and 5. W. Corry defeated D. Spence 2 up and 1. D. Soutar, the 52-year-old golf veteran, went out in 30, which is five Strokes under par. He came home in 41. AMERICAN TEAM FOR CENTENARY. PERFORMANCES AT LOUISVILLE. Rec. 7 p.r... New York, Oct. 14. After leading during the first two rounds Craig Wood faltered in the two final rounds to-day and was placed second in the Louisville (Kentucky) open golf tournament, in which all members of the Melbourne centenary professional team participated. Horton Smith won with 286 strokes for 72 holes. Wood scored 289, Densmore Shute 294, K. Laffoon and Paul Runyan 298 each, and Leo Diegel and Cooper 300 each.
