COUNCIL CONFIRMS DECISION. MOVE TO WITHDRAW PERMISSION A move to withdraw the permission given by the works committee of the Stratford Borough Council for the showing of motion pictures on Christmas night was made by Cr. A. H. Trotter at the council meeting last night, when he moved that the clause in the works committee’s recommendation giving the permission be deleted. Cr. Trotter said “-here was a section of religious people in the town who would not approve of pictures on that night. He did not, and he thought pictures on that night were only a short step to pictures on Sundays. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan): You are inconsistent. We permit games to be played on the park on Sundays, and I cannot see any harm in pictures on Christmas night. Cr. Trotter: not permit it The Mayor: We do not stop it. Cr. R. F. Harkness: We have no power to stop games on the parks on Sundays, or it would have been done by now. The difference between pictures and sport was that one was a money-making matter, while the other was purely recreation, Cr. W. P. P. Gordon said. The amendment was lost by five votes to three. GENERAL ITEMS. Anniversary of Main Body. Messrs. A. D. Sangster, Wharehuia, R. Reed, Tuna, and E. D. Evans, Stratford, left yesterday to attend at Wellington the 20th reunion anniversary of the main body of the New Zealand expeditionary forces. Ariel Street Extension. The application of residents on Ariel Street extension for a supply of’ metal to metal part, of the extension was granted by the Stratford Borough Council last night, provided the applicants supplied the cartage. Conversion of Eltham Loans. A special meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held last night to pass special resolutions in connection with the conversion of borough loans amounting to £38,000. Aerodrome Ground. In reply to a query from Cr. R. F. Harkness, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) stated at the Stratford Borough Council meeting last night that a report on the area proposed as an aerodrome had not been received from the Public Works Department. “I heard that it had come in,” Cr. Harkness said. “Rumour was ever a lying jade,” the town clerk (Mr. P. Skoglund) commented. Ordination at Stratford. Mr. W. A. Carmichael, Hawera, who will be the only entrant into the 'Presbyterian ministry in Taranaki this year, will be ordained at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Presbytery at Stratford. Ministers officiating at the ceremony will be the Revs. J. MacGregor, Stratford, J. D. McL. Wilson, New Plymouth, A. Irvine, Hawera, and J. A. Ryburn, Eltham. Charge on Electric Motors. That the electrical inspector be authorised to allow motors to be used without a minimum charge in cases where consumers were prepared to use them during off peak hours only, and to instal time switches at their own expense, was a recommendation of the electricity committee adopted by the Stratford Borough Council last night. Inter-Club Badminton. The following players have been selected to meet Lepperton in a badminton match at Stratford to-night: Mrs. McKay, Mrs. Cameron, Miss New and Miss Bonner; Messrs. Cameron, Mac Kay, Ennis and Wilson. The Lepperton team will be: Miss M. Gorrie, Miss L. Gorrie, Mis. Thomas and Mrs. Clark; Messrs. Arms, Tate, Wells and Wallace. Work in Library. An increase of one subscriber during the month was reported to the Stratford Borough Council last night by the librarian of tlie municipal library, Mr. C. S. Kelly. There were eight new subscribers and seven former subscribers ware not renewing their subscripitons. Figures covering the month’s activities were: Books issued, 2819; odd books issued, 147; new books added, 44; subscriptions received, £23 7s 9d; total subscribers, 24L PRESERVATION OF PARKS. DOMAIN BOARD MEETING. The Stratford Domain Board met last night. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, presided over the councillors and Messrs. H. C. Johnson and G. D. Hunter. The curator, Mr. E. P. Blanchard, stated that of a donation of trees received from Duncan and Davies 50 pinus insignia were planted at the back of the pound and 24 native trees at the old quarry near the racecourse entrance. An escalonia hedge was planted along the boundary on the north side of the tennis courts, 100 gums and 25 cordyline australis at the quarry and 25 cordyline australis along the river bank in King Edward Park. All the lawns and the sports ground were mowed and the football field and the terraces were top-dressed. The Stratford Cricket Club wrote about damage done to the motor mower through an oversight on the part of members of the club and stated that the committee would meet the board in the. matter of repairs. The town clerk, Mr. P. Skoglund, said the mowdr struck a spike used for spiking the matting. It was not the first time articles had been picked up off the cricket pitch, the Mayor said, and if the mower was going to be damaged it would have to be kept off the pitch. The club will be advised of the cost I of repairs.
