VISIT OF PRINCE

STRATFORD NOT IN ITINERARY, ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHILDREN. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who will visit New Zealand after his attendance at the Melbourne centenary celebrations, will pass through Taranaki, stopping at New Plymouth and Hawera, but not at Stratford. In reply to representations made for the inclusion of Stratford in the itinerary the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. J. A. Young, advised the Stratford Borough Council last night that the inclusion of a halt at Stratford was earnestly considered and it was regretted that the itinerary, which- had been approved by the Prince, could not now be altered. The Government was making special arrangements for the free transport of children from Standard 3 upwards to centres visited by the Prince. “I think the children will appreciate a free trip to New Plymouth,” the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) said. IMPROVING WATER SUPPLY. ACTION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Stratford Borough Council confirmed certain decisions of the works committee at the monthly meeting last night in connection with the report on Stratford’s water supply presented at a special meeting during the month by the New Plymouth borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke. The screen chamber mentioned in Mr. Clarke’s report, the salient features of which were published in the Daily News, will be erected at the intake as soon as possible and the following work on pipe lines will be commenced: 12-inch main to Regan Street, 9-inch along Regan Street to Broadway, 9-inch main from Page Street to Regan Street on Brecon Road, 4-inch main from Brecon Road to Regan Street to Pembroke Road, and a 3-inch connection from Brecon Road to Hamlet Street via Olivia Street. STRATFORD BOROUGH LOANS. RATES UNDER CONVERSION PLAN. In connection with the conversion of Stratford borough loans to a lower rate of interest it is necessary to strike consolidated special rates sufficient to meet the annual charges on each of the conversion loans but on that being done the existing special rates levied in respect of various loans will cease to be securities for the loans. In explaining the position in a letter received by the council last month, the borough solicitors, Messrs. Young and Moss, stated that the annual charges on the loans that were being converted would be £7696 12s and a new special rate to yield that sum plus 10 per cent, would have to be struck. A similar provision was necessary for the annual charges on the loan to the State Advances Office of £1652 17s 2d. 1 SUCCESSFUL HUIROA DANCE. VISITORS FROM OTHER DISTRICTS. A most unusual type of drama with an unusual theme—a mystery case at an emergency hospital and the startling events which lead up to and follow the arrival of the case—“ The Girl in 419” is a picture that nearly all audiences will enjoy. It will come to the Plaza on Wednesday and Thursday. Action, excitement and romance all take their part in the story, and it has its comedy moments too. The film, a B. P. Schulberg production for Paramount, is set in the police emergency division of a big-city hospital. Its action takes place against the background of excitement and humour, of pathos and tragedy, that makes up the day’s routine in such an institution. James Dunn and Gloria Stuart have the romantic leads, and included in the large featured cast are David Manners, Jack La Rue, Shirley Grey, Johnny Hines and William Harrigan.
