TRAM STRIKE LIKELY
STOPPAGE AT MELBOURNE MEN’S DEMANDS REFUSED “WOULD DO RIGHT THING” ( . ■ TROUBLE FOR CENTENARY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10.15 pun. Melbourne, Oct. 12. The Victorian Government is taking action to provide transport in the event of a tram strike next Tuesday, depending largely on motor vehicles and buses under police protection. Mr. A. Cameron, chairman of the Tramways Board, in a statement said the board had already promised the men’s representatives an equitable share of the traffic receipts during the centenary celebrations, and asked them to trust the board to do the right thing in the. event of revenue being greatly augmented. Mr. Cameron also emphasised that there would be increased staff and trams in operation in order to cope with the extra traffic. The Tramways Board decided to refuse the tramwaymen’s demands, which include an increase in wages of 2s a day for all employees during the centenary. There is now a grave possibility that there will be a tramway strike during the Duke of Gloucester s visit.
