NO RAIL CONCESSIONS
STOCK GOING TO ROYAL SHOW. APPEAL MADE TO GOVERNMENT. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. No promise of further concessions on the railage of stock to the Royal Agricultural Show, which is to be held this year at Invercargill, was given in the House of Representatives to-day by the Minister of Railways, the Rt. Hon. G. W, Forbes. Mr. H. S. S. Kyle had appealed to the Government to give cheaper freights as an inducement to breeders to show their stock. Mr. Kyle pointed out that the Department of Agriculture paid £310,000 to the Railway Department last year, and as the Government did nothing to help the Royal Agricultural Society he suggested a reduction should be made in freights to the show. Mr. Forbes said that no railage was charged on stock on the return journey from the agricultural show. Mr. Kyle: But there is the cost of getting there. Mr. Forbes: Yes, but the return trip is a concession. Mr. Kyle: All we get at the show is a ticket and a ribbon. Mr. Forbes: It isn’t only that. If a man goes to a show and gets a ribbon and a ticket he asks a double price for his stock. He doesn’t go there just for the ribbon.
