ELLERSLIE CLASSICS

CLASS FIELDS ENGAGED GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS. V - - WELCOME STAKES REVIEWED. While Marton, Wanganui and Napier Park have already staged spring classic events, the Great Northern Guineas and the Welcome Stakes, both of which will be run at Ellerslie to-day, will be the most lucrative and most important classic events decided so far this season.

Last year the Great Northern Guineas went to Gay Sheila, and this year her relative, Gay Blonde, will endeavour to keep the classic honours in the family. Gay Blonde was almost unbeatable as a juvenile in the north last season, and her recent open company winning debut at Paeroa showed her to have all tl.e credentials of a class three-year-old. Gay Blonde is a brilliant beginner and a courageous finisher, and fillies with these recommendations are few and far between.

Pin Money, from the same stable as Red Manfred, won the Wanganui Guineas recently, but two of the three-year-olds he defeated at Wanganui, Mother Superior and Burnish, have made appreciable improvement in their recent track work.: Namakai and Sporting Blood both made friends by their forward showings at Paeroa, while Rerepai has showed himself to be a match for some of the leading hacks racing in the lower part of the North Island. Lady Kyra may show, her penchant for Ellerslie, even though her prospects would look better had she had recent facing. Canopy showed a fine turn of speed on occasions last season. Without, being up. to the standard of Gay Blonde, King Brierly and Day Wind were both good northern youngsters last season. Going on form and class, performances, the most favoured candidates may be GAY BLONDE MOTHER. SUPERIOR ■ BURNISH.

. In direct contrast to the position in past years, the majority of the youngsters engaged in the Welcome Stakes already have winning, form to their credit. The handsome relative of Gay Sheila and Gay Blonde, Gay Sheik, won at Paeroa recently, but A. Cook’s representative, Galilee, reversed places with him on the concluding day. Both Gay Sheik and Galilee appear extra speedy. In the past Mr. T. H. Lowry has produced several class youngsters, and Kotou will be carrying his colours to-day. When she appeared at Napier Park recently Kotou ran away with the Prince of Wales Handicap. She is a Night Raid filly and is bred to make a name for herself. Symcony decisively beet Legatee, the Debutante Stakes winner at "Wanganui, when they met at Foxton. Since then Symcony and Legatee have been acquired by the same owner, who has preferred the chances of Symcony at Ellerslie to-day. The Vamp, Fleetwind, Trevace and Small Boy are all reported to be youngsters of promise. Bettors may favour the prospects of KOTOU SYMCONY GAY SHEIK.

OPEN COMPANY RACES

MITCHELSON CUP PROSPECTS.

' SHORTS HANDICAP FIELD. The two open company sprints, the Shorts Handicap and th i Flying Handicap at Ellerslie to-day, will all claim special racing interest.

As well as several high-class candidates there is an abundance of recent form for the Mitchelson Cup. Red Manfred was responsible for an outstanding track gallop a couple of days ago, and is obviously vastly improved since he had his first race of the season at Foxton. Spiral has also improved since Wanganui. Apart from his consistent form all this season, Carfex’s track work at Ellerslie suggests 'that Hawera has a strong candidate. Limbohm has Keith Voitre’s services, and will also be a fit candidate. Last year’s winner, Baroscope, and Korokio, Gainsfid, Mungatoon and Horowhenua will all come in for a fair measure of support. Solarium has lately advanced in favour on account of impressive track work. Should the track be heavy those specially suited will include Baroscope, Havering, Carfex and Horowhenua. The favoured division may he

Jonathan's late scratching removes a brilliant sprinter from the Shorts Handicap field. Greek Gold has the advantage of having raced throughout the winter, while Tradesman and British Columbia are both up to good class open company. At her best last autumn Star Artist was little short of brilliant. If she does not need racing she may be one of the dangerous runners. As far as recent form is concerned Rereatu has the best credentials of the field. He has been continually in the limelight at recent meetings during the past two months. Rippling Waters has undoubted class, and showed it when she won at her last start at Paeroa recently. Solomon’s track work makes him a possibility. The favourites may be RIPPLING WATERS REREATU STAR ARTIST

Late track work may be some guide for the Flying Handicap. Kiltowyn, one of the best performers at present racing in the north, has been working very freely, and may not feel the need of a race. Impasto, also a class performer, has been galloping with a touch of brilliancy, and has improved since he

raced at Pakuranga. If reserved Rereatu has the form and racing condition to be prominent. Prolyxo is also in winning form, while Pomp, good in the mood, hails from a strong stable. Versant is solid, while others to be considered include Knight of Australia, Lord Vai, Gay Marigold, Chief Cook, Arch Ruler and Whakapara. It is very open, but the favourites may be KILTOWYN IMPASTO REREATU (if reserved)

ELLERSLIE MINOR RACES

HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE FIELD. FREE AIR IN TRIAL HURDLES. Minor races at Ellerslie to-day include two jumping events, the Trial Hurdles and the Hunters’ Steeplechase, and the Gordon Handicap, a mile event for hacks. In each of the races good fields are carded.

On form Free Air's third to Huntique and Pahu in this year's Grand National Hurdles, and her subsequent victory over good southern hurdlers at Geraldine makes her look rather promising in the Trial Hurdles. Catoma has been schooling well at Ellerslie and has proved flat pace. Chromadyne, Allegretto and Dark Marble have all been fairly good performers on the flat and are interesting novice hurdlers. Booklaw and Hauwai are useful, while La Femme Noire made quit; a good show- i

ing at Paeroa recently. Prominent runners may be FREE AIR CATOMA CHROMADYNE

Since beating Haakon in the Pakuranga Hunt Steeplechase at Ellerslie, when he was not even previously schooled over the country, Flower Bag went on to win the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Steeplechase at New’ Plymouth with the consummate ease. On performances Flower Bag looks the logical favourite for the Hunters’ Steeplechase. Hauwai won this race last year, but the opposition did not include any hunter with the performances of Flower Bag. Miss Dazzle, trained at Ellerslie, cleared away with the Greenmount Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Pakuranga fixture. London, Capella Abbey, Zane Grey and Ardmanning are minor prospects. The best supported candidates may be FLOWER BAG MISS DAZZLE HAUWAI

The large field in the Gordon Handicap is likely to find the racing public in a quandary. Mungacre’s recent impressive showings at Paeroa represent the most recent form, but Gipsy Moth, Scotland, First Lap, Kelly, Tray Bit and Hikutaia all have good form credentials. Going back to last autumn, Royal Appellant was. a speedy two-year-old, while Killadar and Gold Pocket were both

good hacks. Grand Sport, as well as being a leading hack, was placed against open company sprinters at Ellerslie in the winter. In a difficult problem, good support may. come for MUNGACRE GIPSY MOTH ROYAL APPELLANT ELLERSLIE SCRATCHINGS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Ellerslie scratchings are: Welcome Stakes, Small Boy; Great Northern Guineas, Windscreen; Gordon Handicap, Nun Nicer; all engagements, Lagoon; Epsom Handicap (second day), Windscreen. NOTES FROM CAULFIELD. ORO LOSES LAMENESS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 7.10 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 12. Oro worked steadily on the cinders at Caulfield to-day and appears to have thrown off recent lameness. Golden Hair and Golden Promise, in charge of O. Cox, are located at Caulfield. The Queenslander Lough Neagh is also at Caulfield. Silver Ring covered five furlongs in Im. 3Js. Ashley Reed will ride Waltzing Lily in the Stakes, Excelic in the Toorak Handicap, Heroic Prince in the Power Handicap, and the Alban Star colt in the Debutante Stakes.
