AN ACTIVE YEAR

FITZROY SURF CLUB REPORT. FINANCIAL POSITION SOUND. An active and success!”! year has been reviewed in the annual report of the Fitzroy Surf Club to be presented to the annual meeting shortly. During the season, stated the report, the club was fortunate in securing a visit of two world’s champions, Misses Claire Dennis and Francis Bult. The - standard of swimming displayed delighted 'i the public and showed what could be attained by systematic training and coaching on the right lines. The carnival, which incurred considerable expense, was considered the most - ■ successful ever run in Taranaki and re- ’ fleeted credit on the officials concerned. During the season members of the club .e. 4 Acquitted themselves creditably in all ■2 Taranaki swimming events. Two younger ..-’members, B. Milne and L. Charters, - 'represented Taranaki at the New Zea- - land intermediate boys’ championships at • 'Palmerston North. The knowledge gained was reflected in their later efforts, particularly in the case of Milne, who succeeded in gaining both the 50 and 100 yards titles, the latter in record time, at the Taranaki intermediate championships. ■ J.'McLean, the club’s best all-dis-i K thiice swimmer, had success in all car'•nivals and registered a great perform’'since in winning the Flannagan Cup open water swim. Results of aggregate races were: Senior men, C. J. McLean 1, W. X Toomey 2. Intermediate, B. Milne 1. The only championship event held was for the Stephenson Cup for intermediate 'boys, which was won by B. Milne. As ■ usual the club had been successful at ' water polo. The junior boys won the Garth Cup, the senior men’s team won '’ ■the northern division in the championship, only to be beaten by Hawera after *7 a replay for the Taranaki championship. Success also was gained in various lifesaving events. Of the four entered, Fitzroy gained one first and three seconds. A~ usual, club members have again been of assistance in several minor rescues, and the popularity of the beach was a sure testimory to the fact that the public appreciated it as a safe bathing place. Through not entering a team for the Tabor Shield competition J he club was unable to put a team in the Ballin Cup. .However, it was hoped to enter a strong .team next season for both events. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £2 8s at the commencement of the season; the present balance stood at £8 2s. Receipts amounted to £93 8s 9d and expenditure to-£B7 15s sd, leaving a profit on the season’s working of £5 13s 4d. This would be considered very satisfactory, especially in view .t the heavy expenditure incurred. The drain on the club’s finance was much heavier than usual.
