GOLF PLAY IN TARANAKI

NEW PLYMOUTH QUALIFIERS CHONG AND HASSELL IN THE LEAD STRONG WIND SPOILS THE SCORES. A strong southerly wind made conditions difficult at Waiwakaiho on Saturday for play in the second qualifying round for the New Plymouth Golf Club championship. G. M. Chong and F. D. Johns, each with 83, returned the best cards. The first round leaders failed to reproduce their form of the previous week and Chong and Hassell led the qualifiers with totals of 164 for the 36 holes. MRS. WINTER WINS FLAG MATCH.

The Inglewood women’s flag match, which was postponed on Tuesday, was played on Friday, and was won by Mrs. H. Winter, who carried the flag close to the 20th green. Mrs. O’Carroll finished at the 19th, while several others carried the flag to the 18th green. Mrs. Winter has now reduced her handicap to 17 and Mrs. O’Carroll to 24.

WALKLEY BEATS O'CALLAGHAN.

Results of play in club championships of the Hawera Golf Club during the week-end are as follows: —

Senior championship, first round: W. O’Callaghan beat C. O. Pratt at the 20th, R. S. Ward beat McDonald at the 19th. Second round: W. G. Walkley beat O'Callaghan 2 up, Ward beat C. Harrison 2 and 1, J. Tarrant beat R. S. Simpson 5 and 4, G. S. Fry beat D. C. Ryan 5 and 4.

Intermediate, first round: G. Dalgetty, junr., beat W. J. Bright by default, A. W. Lawn beat O. K. Tennent 4 and 3. Second round: L. Ritchie beat A. W. Lawn 2 and 1, R. C. Jordan beat E. W. Snowsill 4 and 3, W. McAnerin beat Dingle 1 up. Junior: J. C. Robb beat L. J. Bull 6 and 5.

Some very fine play was seen, especially in the senior championship, where Tarrant had an unimpeachable stroke round of 74. O'Callaghan, who had a somewhat fortunate win over Pratt, had to bow to Walkley, who played devastating golf.
