CYCLE RACE ROUND EGMONT
RUNDLE IVINS AMATEUR EVENT. REED SECURES FASTEST TIME. The last road race held by the New Plymouth amateur club this season was run round the mountain, a distance of 100 miles, on Saturday. Results are:—
R. Rundle, shr 22m I P. Dunn, 5h 22m 5s 2 R. L. Reed, 4h 49m 30s 3 Fastest time was recorded by R. L, Reed. The points competition resulted: C. A. Hawkins, 21 points 1; F. Bartow, 1.9 points,' 2; C. Mana, Hi points, 3; L. McKay, 8J points, 4. There were seven starters, and at nine o’clock the limit men, Hawkins, Dunn and Rundle started. Murray was the next to start, 25 minutes behind the limit. The virtual scratch men were next (Batten, Reed' and Mana). Hawkins was dropped right at the start, and rode alone until the scratch men caught him at Opunake, but he was unable to hang on. Batten was unfortunate to puncture at Oakura and he retired. Murray, who had ridden all the way alone, was overtaken by Mana and Reed between Kaponga and Eltham.
Dunn and Rundle were the first to come in sight at the finish, and in a desperate sprint Rundle led home by a length. Seven minutes later Reed. Mana . and. Murray came into vtew. Reed was the first to break, gaining a length’s start, and despite Mana’s challenge led h'pme by two lengths. Murray was a further two lengths behind. A. Hawkins, who was dropped by the scratch pien at Qpunake, arrived home a good while later. At the conclusion of the race Dr. Thompson presented the winner R. Rundle with the cup which was given by Mr. Des George, who was among the spectators.
The final series was won by I. Murray with 6} points, C< Mana was second with 5 points and Dunn and C. Hawkins deadheated for third place with 4 points.
