LEAGUE CYCLE NOTES

RIDERS FOR SOUTH ISLAND NEW PLYMOUTH COMPETITORS. POSSIBLY ON BACK MARK. (By “Wheel.”) C. Burke, H. Snowden, F. Fussell and W. Ashman left New Plymouth for Oamaru yesterday to take part in the big South Island cycle race. They left in one party, and intend cycling to Wellington in two days. All going well they should arrive at Christchurch on Saturday morning, and maybe at Oamaru by Monday night. _ . . All are in splendid condition, and it is expected that Burke and Snowden, who will, probably ride off scratch with Watson and company, will put up a good fight for fastest time. It is expected that Ashman, although a scratch man in New Plymouth club races, will receive a fair handicap as he has no distance performances. Fussell, is also entitled to a good mark. The handicaps should be known in New Plymouth early next week. It is possible that Alec Ellis will also make the trip, and if so is sure to give a good account of himself. The New Plymouth club’s cup series concluded last Saturday, when A. Reeve held hig lead to win the cup. Reeve is a promising rider. Unfortunately he will not be able to compete in the mountain race owing to his work. The club’s next races will be held on Saturday week, when a sweepstake event to Puniho will be held. There js then one more sweepstake race, the Rahotu Grey Sheild race, and the club’s road championship around Inglewood. All are to be held before the mountain race.. The club's usual euchre parties have not been so successful this season owing to the club being prevented by police regulations from offering big first prizes. This has made the task of raising finance more difficult than usual.
