FLOWER SHOW CONCLUDES
ST. MARY’S (HAWERA) SUCCESS.
SINGING COMPETITION RESULTS.
The twenty-sixth annual St. Mary’s spring flower show was concluded successfully at Hawera last night. Although the second day this year was not so good financially as last year, Wednesday showed a big improvement, and the total proceeds will be much the same. The features yesterday were the children’s singing competitions last night and the musical programmes throughout the day. • Over 150 people were in the audience for the competitions, which resulted:—
Tiny tots: Averit Pope 1; four entries. Girls under 10: Betty Nicholas and Geraldine Walsh 1, Moori Pope 3; seven entries. Boys under 10: D. Ellis 1, L. Holloway 2, D. Horton 3; seven entries. Under 13: W. Glenn 1, D. Jones 2; six entries.
Miss G. Chadwick arranged the competition, and the judge was Mr. R. F. Page, who in presenting the prizes said the number and standard of entries was astonishingly good. The musical programme was Misses D. Swadling, O. Fox, M. Fox and R. Watson and Messrs. G. McConnell and C. Farrell, orchestral items; Mesdames A. K. Fyson, A. Corrigan and L. H. Giblin and Miss J. Pinson, orchestral items; Miss W. Thomas’ pupils, instrumental items; Mrs. J. Dix and Miss J. Pinson, instrumental items. Reference was made by the Rev. H. W. James to the work of Miss E. Caplen, who had given great service as secretary to the flower show. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. G. Crawford, Fairfax, South Island, is staying with his brother, Mr. 0. Crawford, Okaiawa. Mr. J. E. Campbell, Mayor of Hawera, left for Wellington by yesterday’s mail train. PORT OF PATEA. Septembe- 13: Arrived, m.v. Inaha; sailed, m.v. Inaha. In port, m.v.’s Hawera and Kapunl, for overhaul. September 14: High water, 1.48 a.m. and 2.14-'p.m.
