HAWERA HOCKEY MATCHES
SEVEN-A-SIDE EVENT TO HAWERA.
BENNETT AND SUTTON CUP WON.
The annual seven-a-side contest for the Bennett and Sutton Cup was played at Hawera on Wednesday, five hockey teams taking part. Hawera seniors, a team containing two or three- players of representative standard, won the cup, being undefeated in the four matches played. The competition was played on the rounds system, each team meeting all the others. Hawera’s main opposition came from Tokaora, which won two and drew one of its four games. Johnson was a tower of strength for Tokaora, scoring six of the side’s seven goals, while Fleet scored six of Hawera senior’s nine goals. Three of the ten matches played resulted in draws, each of the bottom teams taking its points in that way. Tokaora, beaten narrowly by Hawera seniors, showed its merit as a junior combination by beating Egmont seniors and Hawera juniors and drawing with Alhambra seniors.
After the tournament Mr. C. J. McFadyen presented the cup to Mr. • J. Cruickshanks, captain of the Hawera team. Hawera club officials organised the’ play, and Messrs. McFadyen, A. Jackson, Fryer and M. B. Shaw were referees.
Details of play are:— First round: Hawera seniors 3 v. Tokaora 2; Hawera juniors 0 v. Alhambra 0. The scorers were: Hawera seniors, Fleet (2) and McGlashan; Tokaora, Johnson and Kerrisk. Second round: Tokaora 1 v. Alhambra 1; Hawera seniors 1 v. Egmont 0. The scorers were: Tokaora, Johnson; Alhambra, Fredericks; Hawera, Fleet. Third round: Hawera seniors 3 v. Alhambra 1; Egmont 0 v. Hawera juniors 0. The scorers were: Hawera seniors, McGlashan, Fleet, Cruickshanks; Alhambra, Fredericks.
Fourth round: Tokaora 3 v. Hawera juniors 1; Egmont 3 v. Alhambra 0. The scorers were: Tokaora, Johnson (3); Hawera juniors, Jones; Egmont, Foy (2) and Windle. Fifth round: Hawera seniors 2 v. Hawera juniors 0; Tokaora 1 v. Egmont 0. The scorers were: Hawera seniors, Fleet (2); Tokaora, Johnson.
