BULLET IN SOLDIER’S CHEST
CARRIED FOR 18 YEARS.
OTAGO MAN’S EXPERIENCE.
Dunedin, Sept. 12.
It was recently reported from Sydney that a Turkish bullet had been removed from the t’ .igh of an Australian soldier 19 years after he had received the wound. Following upon this an Otago man draws attention to his own experience in having a Turkish bullet removed from the anterior wall of his chest in June of last year, 18 years after he was shot at Gallipoli. The Otago man, who was a member of the Otago Regiment, was wounded on August 7, 1915, and the bullet remained lodged in his chest until after its position had been established by means of X-ray photographs. The very delicate operation that resulted in its removal was carried out with complete success by a Dunedin surgeon at the public hospital. The bullet has been retained by the man as a grim reminder of his unusual experience.
