SOCIAL CREDIT SUPPORTED

COLONEL CLOSEY AT STRATFORD. INTEREST OF GOOD ATTENDANCE. New Zealand's problems and their solution by the Douglas social credit system were explained to a good attendance in the Parish Hall, Stratford, last night by Colonel S. E. J. Closey who ranged throughout the world for examples in support of his contentions. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) presided. The meeting endorsed unanimously the opinion that the country’s problems could be charged to the monetary system, that there was a deficiency of purchasing power and that the Douglas plan offered the best solution. There was no doubt, said the Mayor, in introducing the speaker, that the world was in a peculiar state as regarded the world’s wealth, and that being so the thought was promoted that the financial system must be at fault. Colonel Closey’s address was similar to those given elsewhere in South and Central Taranaki. At the conclusion of his address he invited questions. The trading banks would carry on as at present he told a questioner, but there would be a separate issue of money to balance the difference between production and consumption.

To the suggestion that the special issue might become frozen, Colonel Closey replied that in such circumstances another special issue would have to be let out till the frozen section was loosened. Douglas credit supporters, however, considered that the. scheme would rapidly thaw out capital which was at present tied up. Asked how New Zealand would meet its overseas debt commitments, Colonel Closey referred to the chaotic condition of international debt, and said Governments would have to combine and agree on the amount to be paid, by the debtor nation.
