ADMISSION OF RUSSIA
MOST IMPORTANT MATTER MEMBERSHIP OF THE LEAGUE ASSEMBLY AWAITS REPLY OVERCOMING OPPOSITION British Wireless. Rugby, Sept. 11. The question of Russia joining the League of Nations was’ referred to as one of the most important matters to have lately come before the present Assembly in a broadcast address from Geneva by Mr. R. A. Eden, Lord Privy Seal, who added that he hoped the preliminary negotiations now proceeding would before long be successfully concluded. It is understood the representatives of the Powers taking the initiative in these negotiations are collecting as many signatures as possible to the telegram to be sent to the Soviet Government in which the hope will be expressed that the Government will enter the League. The reply of the Soviet Government will come before the Assembly, together with a suggestion that the Soviet should be accorded a permanent seat on the council. Newspapers state that the misgivings of Argentina and Portugal have not been entirely overcome, but their opposition will probably take the form of an adverse vote in the Assembly, where unanimity is not required, and abstention from voting in the council meetings, company.
