DUTY UPON GOLD NOT PAID
SHIPMENT MADE TO AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH JEWELLER FINED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Sept. 12. For shipping to Australia gold on which the duty had not been paid, Thomas Hornsby, a jeweller, Regent Street, was fined £5O and costs by the magistrate, Mr. H. P. Lawry, this morning.
Counsel for the collector of Customs said Hornsby paid duty on several shipments in March and therefore was well aware that duty had to be paid in April. He met a member of the crew of the Waikouaiti and suggested that gold valued at £428 be shipped without the payment of duty. The gold went by that vessel in May. It was a deliberate offence.
Counsel for Hornsby said Hornsby lost money by sending gold to Australia. It would have paid him better to have paid the duty and sent the gold to England.
