NEW TELEGRAPH MACHINE
EIGHT MESSAGES; ONE LINE
NEW PLYMOUTH INSTALLATION.
IMPROVING EXISTING FACILITIES.
MORE ECONOMICAL TRANSMISSION.
With the object of improving the existing telegraph facilities at New Plymouth, the Telegraph Department is at present considering the installation of a Murray multi-flex telegraph machine. Machines of this type are already in use in the main centres, such as Auckland and Wellington, and at Wanganui, and the installation at New Plymouth will mean the extension of the multi-flex system to New Plymouth. Although no definite announcement has been made, it is probable the installation will be begun within about a month and that a further month will see it completed. By means of the multi-flex machine eight messages may be sent over the one wire, four in each direction, at a speed of from 40 to 60 words a minute. It is a more modern machine than any now at New Plymouth, and has various technical advantages appreciated only by the expert. Its main feature, however, is that it is more economical, as regards both the number of lines required and the handling of messages. No alteration to the existing building will be necessary, although the Murray will replace several other machines, including a Creed teleprinter and perhaps some of the older Morse machines.
