BRIGHT FOOTBALL GAME

• MAORIS PLAY GREAT IRUGBY ’ DEFEAT OF SOUTH CANTERBURY. ' FINE DISPLAY IN SECOND SPELL. s 1 By Telegraph—Press Association. J Timaru, Last Night. The New Zealand Maoi'i Rugby team opened its tour against South Canter- , bury to-day, winning by 23 points to • 16. The first spell was evenly contested, and towards the close the visiting forwards seemed as though they had lost ’ their condition. Their looks belied them, ' however, and in the second half they ' gave a great display, gaining confidence ’ and combination. As the game progressed the Maoris ■ treated the public to a tine exhibition, > and after another game together should ■ be a hard proposition. The forwards • have weight and pace, and the backs, a t speedy lot, lose no chance of opening r the game up. The home .forwards had ■ a hard battle to hold their heavier opponents, and, though South Canterbury had easily the better of the scrums, the backs were unable to make use of their opportunities. 1 Play in the first half was mediocre and gave no indication of the sparkling foot--1 ball which was to come later. At the interval the score was 3-all, but in the second half the visitors put on 20 points 1 and the home side 13. The scoring ’ fluctuated in a manner which delighted • the crowd, and it was not till the last 10 minutes that the Maoris gained the 1 upper hand. In the closing stages they ! were always dangerous, the backs stagI ing brilliant movements. Smith, the Hawkes Bay crack, was well s marked by Morrison, and got no chances, i but Hohapata, on the opposite wing gave an outstanding display, scoring three fine . tries. Tangitu, McDonald and Harrison ; also scored tries and Hemi kicked a ; penalty goal and converted one try. For t the home side Giddings, Adkins, Seaton . and Strang scored, Gaffaney .converting two. i • WANGANUI MUCH TOO GOOD ; MARLBOROUGH’S SUCCESS ENDED. > ‘ i ' : DEFEAT BY 20 POINTS TO EIGHT. i — ) Blenheim, Last Night. . The Wanganui touring Rugby team put an end to Marlborough’s run of sue-, cess by inflicting a defeat by 20 points to eight in brilliant weather. It was a ragged exhibition, with mtich mishandling by both sides during the first spell. Marlborough led by pight points to six .at the interval. Early in the second half the visitors sprang to life, playing . like a different team, making the game , open and tossing the ball about among , the forwards as well as the backs. The tourists buried the opposition, which ■ lacked combination due to the absence of > several regular players.* The Wanganui . men all handled well, passing freely and . running fast and straight. . Brogden, Morgan and Walker were the 1 . best backs and Newland, Hutchinson and I i Lockett, the outstanding Wanganui fort wards. O’Sullivan and Lane in the backs ; and Mcßryne, Best and Lovell in the forwards were conspicuous for Marlborough. For Wanganui tries were scored by Petersen, Jones, Follas, Hutchinson and Watty Thompson, Morgan converted one and kicked a penalty. Best and , Hardy made Marlborough's scores, Diack converting one try. WELLINGTON BEATS SOUTHLAND. FAST MATCH AT INVERCARGILL. Invercargill, Last Night.
