SUB-UNION RUGBY MATCH

OHURA BEATS MANIAPOTO. GOOD HOOKING BY FORWARDS. There was a good attendance at the Ohura domain on Saturday for the annual friendly match between teams representing the Maniapoto and Ohura Rugby sun-unions. The conditions were perfect but in spite of this neither team gave a spectacular display. The final score was:—Ohura 16 v. Maniapoto 11. A feature of the game was the splendid hooking by the Ohura forwards, who completely outclassed th: opposing vanguard. Margan (the captain), with Kemp and Robinson,' were conspicuous. Crossman was well shepherded, but'made the most of the few chances that came his way. For the visitors Trust, Taylor and Griffin were the best players. Tire ground was dry and fast and there was little excuse for the faulty handling that occurred throughout the game. The teams wefe:—

Maniapoto: Dowie, J. Barlow, Griffin, Coffin, Hickey, Evans, R. Barlow, Peterson, Marks, Mackenzie,"-Kawe, Trust, Davis, Taylor, -Hartwell. Ohura: Parsons, Howie, Jorgensen, Weinberg, Crossman, Brett, J. Margan, Williams, N. Margan, Kemp, Nelson, Box, Baker, Julian, Robinson. ■■ Margan kicked off for Ohura. Maniapoto ■ attacked, but Crossrqan sent the team' back, over-eagerness by the forwards giving Ohura a penalty. Play settled at half-way. Brett sent his backs away, but Maniapoto was awarded a penalty on its goal line. Ohura continued to attack, and from a miskick Kemp secured to score near the posts, Weinberg converting. The Ohura forwards followed up fast, the ball going to Crossman, who passed to Weinberg, who kicked through; Howie, following up fast, just missed scoring. The Maniapoto forwards again went to the attack. Offside play by Julian was penalised, but R. Barlow’s kick at goal failed. Ohura maintained the attack, Barlow finding touch in the corner with a good kick. Kemp ; and Nelso.. were prominent in turning the attack, and play was taken to midfield, where Crossman secured to pass to Weinberg, who was well tackled. Hickey attempted a drop kick without success. From a scrum Brett sent Weinberg away, but offside play gave Maniapoto another penalty and R. Barlow gained -a good deal of ground with a kick. Mishandling by Maniapoto allowed Crossman to break away and pass to Howie, who completely outpaced the opposition to score a good try, which was converted by Weinberg. A good line kick by Hickey took play to halfway. Coffin appeared to be away for a try, but stepped into touch. Faulty handling by the Ohura backs got them into danger, but Maniapoto was awarded a penalty from which Barlow kicked a good goal. The Ohura forwards were gaining possession from practically every scrum at this time, but faulty handling by the backs spoiled many opportunities. From a scrum on the Ohura line Maniapoto had a good chance to score, but faults handling allowed the Ohura forwards to break away. Taylor was prominent in a forward rush that took ply to the Ohura line, but the Ohura forwards broke through in a solid rush to place Maniapoto in difficulties at halftime with the score Ohura 10, Maniapoto 3. 1

On the resumption of play Kemp broke through from halfway and scored his second try; Weinberg’s kick missed its mark. Trust, the King Country forward, who was working well for Maniapoto,. made a bold bid, but was pulled down just short Of the- line. Ohura was penalised for a scrum infringement and R. Barlow kicked an easy goal. A determined rush by the Ohura forwards took play well up-field, where Howie was caught in possession, allowing Kemp to score his third try without opposition. A sudden attack by Ohura found the local backs out of position. The ball travelled to Griffin, who made a good run and scored the only try for his side. Coffin converted and the final whistle sounded with the score: Ohura 16, Maniapotq 11. Mr. Burton was the referee.
