NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK

FINAL TRIALS FOR WANGANUI. GALE HAMPERS OPERATIONS. The heavy southerly gale made conditions anything but pleasant at New Plymouth, yesterday. The wind assisted the horses going down 1 the back, but was right in their faces as they came up the straight. Nearly all the horses with engagements at Wanganui tomorrow were galloped, all the work taking place on the plough. Grateful, who is to contest the juvenile event on Saturday, bowled home over'three furlongs in 425. As he was pot bustled, this was a satisfactory effort. ■ ■ , Headmistress was always going well over seven furlongs, completed in Im. 37Js. The Chief Ruler filly continues to do well and should prominently in the Putiki Hack to-morrow. Superior was worked the reverse way, but her task was an easy one. Leo Colossus had Ythan as a companion over seven furlongs at a good three-quarter pace, both moving freely. • Gold Mission and Bay Sand could have improved on their lm. 10s. for five furlongs but they were not out to make time.

: Ngapapa ran the last two furlongs of a round in 275., hitting out well. > Davistock and Lalla Quex were associated over seven furlongs, the last five taking lm. 5Js. Both put plenty of dash into their work, finishing on strongly against the wind. This pair have made good progress since racing at New Plymouth.

General Quex and Glerivane ran an easy half mile, finishing on solidly. Illuminate (H. Dulieii) jumped six hurdles on the inside in good style. There was not much pace on for the first two hurdles, but he was going fast for the final pair.

Orapai and Courtega, commencing at the five furlongs, showed a wonderful burst of pace down the back with the wind behind them. The first furlong occupied Ills., two furlongs 22 3-55., and three furlongs 34 4-ss. Naturally they slowed up ’ considerably on coming into the wind up the straight and the full distance took lm. 21s. Orapai was half-h-length in front at the finish. Red Fox, who looks much improved by '■ his recent racing, and Lady Kyra did steady pace work on the plough. Bonny Glow was exercised on the inside. Superior, Headmistress and Grateful went to Wanganui by float yesterday. Orapai, Leo Colossus, Courtega, Lalla Quex and Davistock will go by train to-day.
